NASCAR drivers, execs turn out to honor Hunter

If Jim Hunter wasn't promoting stock cars, he was probably playing golf. So it made sense Thursday to bring Hunter's loves together to begin a weekend when the memory of the late NASCAR executive will be celebrated.

Hunter, the former Darlington president and chief spokesman of NASCAR, died of cancer last October at 71. The Sprint Cup series returns to Darlington for the first time since with the Southern 500 on Saturday night.

Former series champ Rusty Wallace says golf was never too far from Hunter's mind, no matter the situation.

"He'd be in a board meeting with NASCAR with his golf shoes on. He'd be in a drivers' meeting with his golf shoes on. He had his golf shoes everywhere he went," Wallace said. "We always laughed about it, but he loved it."

NASCAR Foundation executive director Sandy Marshall said the tournament and a silent auction hoped to raise $40,000 each for three initiatives: to name a room in Hunter's honor at Florence's McLeod Children's Hospital, fund a Jim Hunter Memorial Scholarship at Hunter's alma mater, the University of South Carolina; and to support the foundation, which Hunter helped establish five years ago.
